Christian Spirituality and Interreligious Relations

Lecture by Professor Leo D. Lefebure
This presentation will explore how three dimensions of the classical Christian spiritual path, via purgativa (the way of purgation), via illuminativa (the way of illumination), and via unitiva (the way of union), can provide a helpful framework for relating Christian spirituality to the challenges and opportunities of interfaith encounters.  In a world marked by interreligious misunderstanding and tension, the first and often most formidable challenge involves acknowledging past wrongdoing, forgiving and asking forgiveness, and seeking reconciliation. If trust can be established, the illuminative way can guide partners to see each other more clearly through mutual sharing.  The unitive way can invite interreligious participants to hope for a deeper experience of unity and oneness with their partners in dialogue, with all forms of life, with the entire universe, and with ultimate reality.
